ND officials promote work zone safety

By Doug Barrett May 27, 2022 | 1:20 PM

With another busy construction season beginning to heat up across North Dakota safety officials urged motorists today (Friday) to slow down when approaching orange cones and flashing lights. This year’s construction season consists of some $500 million dollars in projects around the state.

Russ Hanson of the Associated General Contractors of North Dakota says no two constructions zones are the same.  “We have one of the shortest construction seasons in all of America and we have a lot of daylight in the spring and summer.  So the projects will start early and go until sunset.”
North Dakota D-O-T Director Bill Panos says fines for work zone violations start at $80 dollars.  “More importantly that drivers come home alive and workers do not get injured.  We have people get injured every year in construction zones.”

Motorists should slow down and drive distraction free to help increase safety throughout work zones. Other tips for motorists include:

  • Follow signage and be aware that traffic configurations often change in work zones.
  • Be patient. Work zones are not present to inconvenience drivers, they are an important part in maintaining and rebuilding our state’s infrastructure.
  • Stay alert. Dedicate your full attention to the roadway.
Major road construction projects in the Grand Forks District include:
• U.S. 2 westbound structure replacement near Petersburg
• ND 35 asphalt milling and overlay project from Michigan to Junction of ND 17
• Interstate 29 southbound concrete pavement repair and grinding project north of Grand Forks
• ND 297 Demers Avenue bridge structure rehabilitation
• ND 1 asphalt milling and overlay from Junction of County Road 8 and 15 to Nekoma Spur
