MN egg producer accused of price gouging reaches settlement

By Pat Sweeney Oct 25, 2021 | 4:59 PM

A Minnesota-based egg producer will donate more than 1 million eggs to non-profit organizations to fight hunger and food insecurity throughout the state.

It’s part of a settlement reached with the Minnesota Attorney General’s office, which sued Litchfield-based Sparboe farms for price-gouging in the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The A-G sued Sparboe last month, alleging that it tripled its egg prices in March 2020, despite an executive order banning price gouging during the COVID-19 peacetime emergency.

Sparboe must ensure that the eggs are of the same quality as the eggs it sells at retail to Minnesota consumers.  It must also assume all costs related to the donation and not pass them on to the nonprofits.
