A request to begin raising funds for a new UND flight operations building was unanimously approved Tuesday by the State Board of Higher Education’s Budget and Finance Committee.
UND says the $20 million dollar project to replace the current facility, near GFK airport, would be covered by private funds.
UND’s Associate VP for Facilities Mike Pieper said the structure was built in 1974 on marshy land, which has caused some shifting of the building.
"We would remove the building, dig out the poor soil, build the correct foundation and then build back a proper building," Pieper said. "So not only from a programmatic needs standpoint, it is beyond its life and the (new) building should serve the needs of UND for quite a while."
Pieper also said the building gets plenty of use, even late into the night.
The new flight operations building would have twice the space of the building now in use (24,050 square feet, as opposed to 12,600).
The matter will come before the full State Board of Higher Education on Sept. 26.
