The U.S. Senate unanimously passed a proposal Thursday to change the name of Sullys Hill National Game Preserve to White Horse Hill, its traditional Dakota name.
North Dakota Senator Kevin Cramer wrote
the legislation and told the Senate that the land on the Spirit Lake
reservation was named in 1904 after General Alfred Sully.
Cramer said Sully gained notoriety for committing several massacres against Native Americans, including one of the greatest massacres in North Dakota’s history. He said many descendants of his victims live on the land surrounding the hill.
The North Dakota congressional delegation – with the support of Governor Doug Burgum and Tourism Director Sara Otte Coleman – introduced the legislation in July after the tribe requested the hill return to its historic Dakota name.
