Sales and use tax collections were down during the second quarter of the year but collections of online sales soared.
Preliminary data showed a 500 percent spike in the number of North Dakotans doing their buying online in March and April.
Tax Commissioner Ryan Rauschenberger says it’s good that the state collects sales tax on online purchases but it could impact how revenues will look for the 2021 Legislature. Rauschenberger says many of those dollars go out of state and it creates a ripple effect in income and other tax types.
North Dakota taxable sales & purchases were down 22.5% in April…May…and June.
