The Grand Forks School Board will take a little more time to decide the fate of West Elementary. Escalating deferred maintenance costs and declining enrollment threaten to close the district’s oldest school. West was built in 1949 and needs over $2.4 million in upgrades.
Dozens of people showed up at last night’s school board meeting to voice support for the neighborhood school.
The local district is planning to ask voters in 2020 to support a tax hike to help solve over 77-million dollars in deferred maintenance across the district. School Superintendent Terry Brenner says conversations are underway for both keeping and closing West School.
The board will discuss the future of West again at a meeting on January 6th. A decision on the school’s future won’t be made until January 21st at the earliest.
