GF Housing Survey

Good news and bad on the low income housing front in Grand Forks. A recent analysis prepared for the city’s Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program suggests 15-percent of households are cost burdened….17-percent severely impacted. Cost burdened is if 30 to 50-percent of all household income goes to paying rent…severely burdened is if the figure tops 50-percent.
Jen Garner with Root Policy Research says the lack of affordable housing is not unique to Grand Forks.
Garner says the local numbers are actually down a bit from previous studies - and is likely the result of a decline in college enrollment.
The study also indicated a further need for affordable childcare – especially for infants.
The study included HUD-provided data…census numbers…focus groups…and a resident survey of 625 participants. The findings were shared with members of the city council this week.
