GF - Alcohol Permit

The latest request for a co-mingling alcohol permit brought some familiar arguments to the Grand Forks council last night. The city has approved a number of similar permits for alcohol at downtown festivals and fairs over the years. Public Health Director Debbie Swanson says she’s not trying to signal anyone one organization out - but she has some general concerns.
Swanson says the exposure to consumption and sale of alcohol is a known predictive factor for youth experimenting and adults binge drinking.
Police Chief Mark Nelson was asked if downtown co-mingling creates more problems for law enforcement vs the traditional beer garden. Nelson says they tend to have less incidents during co-mingling.
The Downtown Development Association made the co-mingling request for a street fair in September. The council gave preliminary approval to the permit last night on a four to one vote.
