CAT may absorb UND bus service in 2020

A plan for Grand Forks’ Cities Area Transit to absorb UND's bus system next year has been given preliminary approval by the city.
“CAT” transportation division director Dale Bergman says talks began nine years ago with UND officials, who were trying to find ways to save money.
Bergman says no UND routes would change and the overall budget would be more than $3 million, split three ways between Grand Forks, East Grand Forks and UND.
three new buses worth $1.5 million would be purchased to replace UND’s
30-year-old vehicles, which the University leases from the state. UND would pay
20 percent of the cost with federal funds taking care of the rest.
"Basically, it's going to operate the same as what the University has right now," Bergman said. "When they're off on school breaks and stuff like that, we will not be operating on the University campus with those particular vehicles."
the city would cover most administrative costs, but UND would pay for drivers.
The plan would take effect in August of 2020.
The city council is expected to take up the matter at its meeting next Monday.
