ND lawmaker upset over cracked windshields

By Doug Barrett Feb 2, 2023 | 7:59 AM

Dump trucks hauling aggregate material on a North Dakota highway would be required to tarp the material to prevent spillage. Representative Lawrence Klemin says far too often the rock… sand…stone…and slate falls out of the truck damaging roads and windshields.

Amanda Remynse of the North Dakota Motor Carriers Association says the bill does little to stop vehicle damage and adds an extra cost to doing business.

The North Dakota Highway Patrol offered neutral testimony on the bill. Safety and Education Officer Wade Kadrmas says enforcement is somewhat difficult unless the trooper observes the material flying off the load. He says during a five year span between 2017 and 2021 the N-D-H-P has issued 358 citations and 283 warnings.

The current penalty is $20 dollars. The proposed fine is $100.

The committee no immediate action on House Bill 1253.
