Hennepin Co. Sheriff is investigated for DUI after crash

Authorities suspect Hennepin County Sheriff David Hutchinson was driving drunk when he crashed a county vehicle in western Minnesota. The State Patrol said Hutchinson rolled the vehicle early Wednesday morning just east of Alexandria. He was alone and suffered noncritical injuries. Douglas County sheriff’s deputies responded and suspected Hutchinson was impaired. A state trooper took a urine sample from Hutchinson, who issued a statement acknowledging he was driving after drinking and he’s under investigation for driving under the influence. He said he made an “inexcusable decision.”

Hennepin County Sheriff Dave Hutchinson is being investigated for DUI in connection with a one-vehicle crash this (Wed) morning east of Alexandria.

The State Patrol says, around 2:30 AM, Hutchinson was driving an SUV that left I-94 and rolled.

Hutchinson said he was taken to a hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

As Hutchinson put it: “I made the inexcusable decision to drive after drinking alcohol and I am deeply sorry.”

In a social media statement, Hutchinson said he  takes responsibility for his actions… and will accept the consequences.

He said he’s relieved that no one else was injured in the crash.

Hutchinson added: “I will immediately address my personal issues surrounding alcohol and seek the help I need to continue to serve the people of Hennepin County. “

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office and the State Patrol are investigating.
