GF looking to evict chickens from neighborhoods

On a split vote the Grand Forks council took the first step last night to ban people from keeping chickens within city limits.

Under current code residents can receive a permit for fowl if they obtain a neighbor’s permission within 75 feet of the property and pass a health department check for sanitation.

According to a staff report the city has only issued ten permits since 2013 – and received two complaints about the birds.

Council President Dana Sande says allowing chickens in town only provides another avenue to have disagreements among neighbors.  “There doesn’t seem to be a rush of people wanting chickens.  In my opinion the chickens belong in the farmyards – and the farmyards aren’t in the city limits.”

The council voted four to three in favor of the ban.  A first reading of the new ordinance would come at the council’s July 6th meeting.

In a related note the council appears more willing to allow beekeepers to have colonies within city limits.  Staff will develop a policy for regulating the bees and bring it back for further review.
