For the first time in its Division I history, the North Dakota football team is slated to take on a Big Ten opponent. UND athletics director Brian Faison announced on Wednesday that the Fighting Hawks are scheduled to play at Nebraska on Sept. 3, 2022 and again on Sept. 19, 2026The Cornhuskers are one of the most-storied programs in college football having won five national championships at the Football Bowl Subdivision level with the latest of those coming in 1997.
"This two-game series with Nebraska gives our team the opportunity to compete against one of the truly iconic college football programs," Faison said. "And for our fans, this is another regional matchup that will make it easier for them to attend and be part of one of the top gameday experiences that college football has to offer."
Nebraska joined the Big Ten in July of 2011 after spending the previous 17 seasons as a member of the Big 12 Conference.
These two programs have met once before on the gridiron in 1961 when the Cornhuskers defeated UND 33-0. Nebraska was a member of the Big Eight Conference at that time.
Playing a Big Ten opponent is not completely foreign to UND, who squared off with Big Ten foes Minnesota (0-11) and Iowa (0-1) when it was playing at the NCAA Division II level. The last of those meetings was a 42-30 loss to the Gophers in 1974.
The Fighting Hawks transitioned to the Football Championship Subdivision prior to the 2008 season.
