UND recruit named to initial 2019 U.S. World Junior Summer Showcase roster

Incoming freshman forward Shane Pinto (Franklin Square, N.Y.) has been named to the initial 44-man U.S. roster that will play July 26-Aug. 3 in Plymouth, Mich., The players will audition for a spot on the U.S. National Junior Team that will compete in the 2020 International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) World Junior Championship, Dec. 26, 2019-Jan. 5, 2020, in Ostrava and Trinec, Czech Republic.
The announcement comes one day after current UND sophomore
defenseman Jacob Bernard-Docker and Jonny Tychonick were each
named to Team Canada's National
Junior Team Summer Development Camp.
Pinto (6-2, 195, F) played last season in the USHL with the Lincoln Stars and the Tri-City Storm. He potted 17 goals and added 15 assists for 32 points in just 30 games with the Stars before being shipped to the Storm, where he tallied 11 more goals and 16 assists in 26 games in the regular season. In the playoffs, he compiled nine points in just six games, scoring four times and chipping in five assists. He was named to the six-man USHL All-Rookie team for his efforts last season.
He's aiming to become the next Fighting Hawks player to aid the Americans’ efforts at the World Juniors, with 23 UND players landing on Team USA rosters since 2000. The last UND players to wear the Red, White and Blue at the IIHF World Junior Championship were Brock Boeser and Nick Schmaltz, who helped deliver a bronze medal in 2016.
The Franklin Square, N.Y., product, who will join the Fighting Hawks in the 2019-20 season, is expected to go in the very early rounds of the NHL Entry Draft which begins tomorrow in Vancouver, B.C.
