The search committee that will help UND find its next athletic director held its first meeting Monday afternoon.

Current athletic director Brian Faison is retiring as of Dec. 31.

Committee member Peter Johnson said the committee fine-tuned the job description.

"We're looking at Dec. 3 as the date for candidates to apply for maximum consideration for the position," Johnson said. "We're going and try to get this out as soon as we can so (the applicants) can have ample time to put out applications."

Johnson said, under the state’s new open-records laws, the names of the applicants will not be made public.

"The new law took effect Aug. 1, which makes all applications closed until the final three candidates are chosen," he said. "And then only the information to those three are open under North Dakota's newest state law related to open records."

Johnson was asked who would be the athletic director if a new one is not ready by Dec. 31.

"If it gets to that point...then Brian Faison will continue on for a time period until a new athletic director is selected and is able to start," Johnson said.

The original plan called for Faison to be a consultant from Jan. 1 through June 30.
