With National Hockey League training camps underway this week, 29 former University of North Dakota standouts are vying for spots with their respective organizations heading into the 2018-19 season.
The 29 camp participants include four members of the 2017-18 Fighting Hawks squad who are attending their first NHL training camps: goaltender Cam Johnson (New Jersey), defenseman Christian Wolanin (Ottawa), and forwards Shane Gersich (Washington) and Austin Poganski (St. Louis). Both Wolanin and Gersich made their NHL debuts last year following the conclusion of North Dakota’s season.
A school-record-tying 22 UND alumni played in the NHL last season, the most of any National Collegiate Hockey Conference (NCHC) program. When Gersich debuted with the Capitals on March 28, he became the 100th product of UND to play in the NHL, second-most in the entire nation behind only Minnesota.
The NHL regular season opens on Wednesday, Oct. 3.
