A former Grand Forks teacher will spend two years in jail for having sexual relations with a student. James Whalen was sentenced in Northeast Central District Court in Grand Forks on charges of Corruption or Solicitation of a Minor and Sexual Assault. Court records show Whalen was sentenced to four years with two suspended on each count. He will also be on probation for five years and will be required to register as a sex offender. Whalen was initially charged in March of last year. He joined the Grand Forks school system as a science teach in August 1998. He was placed on administrative leave February 22nd (2016) and resigned March 1st. The sentences run concurrently.
