University of North Dakota researchers are keeping an eye on federal budget proposals coming out of Washington. President Trump is proposing a five-point-eight billion dollar cut to the National Institutes of Health – a 20-percent reduction. The N-I-H typically allots 85-percent of its funding to research grants for medical institutions – including U-N-D. In a prepared statement Med School Dean Joshua Wynne says last year S-M-H-S received more than 12-million dollars from the N-I-H.
The funding consists of two components: direct costs and facilities plus administrative costs. Wynne says if either is jeopardized it would be a major impediment to research programs.
