National Weather Service has declared this Winter Awareness Week across North Dakota. During a normal winter season the Red River Valley can expect four to five Winter Storm Warnings and two to three Blizzard Warnings. In addition the region sees a couple of High Wind events each year. N-W-S Warning Coordinator Greg Gust says winter is a big deal in this part of the country. Gust says extreme cold is probably the biggest economic impact on our region.
The Climate Prediction Center is forecasting a colder and snowier winter season due to the formation of a La Nina event.
During the 1996-97 winter the Red River Valley experienced ten Blizzard events.
Minnesota will mark Winter Hazard Awareness Week starting November 6th.
