North Dakota DOT officials kicked off the summer construction season today with a message about safety. Last year there were three work zone fatalities. Director of Operations Wayde Swenson says around 370-million dollars in road construction is being planned around the state this season. Swenson says the 2019 campaign is a mix or rural and urban projects.
In an effort to improve safety the DOT is incorporating the use of new technology in certain construction projects to provide real-time traffic congestion information on digital signs. In addition portable rumble strips will be used again this year to alert drivers they are approaching a flagger in a work zone.
Swenson says the best advice he can offer when in a construction zone...slow down...and put down the phone.
