The North Dakota Senate has killed a bill designed to cap a local government’s property tax increases.
The measure would have been limited increases to three-percent per year unless voters approved larger hikes.
The Senate agreed in conference for a three-percent cap - but only if petitioned by the people. Grand Forks Senator Lonnie Laffen says he’s not convinced there’s a problem. laffen says the "Red Book" prepared by the Tax Department suggests 45 other states have higher property tax rates than North Dakota.
Laffen says he favors annual reporting by the counties to evaluate the need for a cap.
