North Dakota lawmakers are beginning to feel deadline pressure.

They don't have to adjourn until May 1, but are hoping to be out 10 days earlier to give themselves room to respond to any worsening of the state's budget picture or any federal policy changes. Most of their remaining time will be in conference committees to reconcile different versions of bills that have passed both chambers.Work on the budget continues, as lawmakers struggle with a balance sheet that shows revenues falling nearly $500 million short of what's needed to support a more than $4 billion spending plan.
