North Dakota Ag Commissioner Doug Goehring is challenging gardeners across the state to donate a million servings of fresh produce this harvest season. Goehring is plugging the Hunger Free Garden Project which asks growers to donate extra fruits and veggies to food pantries across the state.
Since its inception in 2010 the project has recorded more than one point-eight million pounds of fresh produce donations. Jared Slinde of the Great Plains Food Bank says one in nine North Dakotans struggle with not enough food to eat each day. Goehring says sadly in a state that produces so much food - hunger is very much a problem here.
