Law enforcement officials who have spent a dozen years working to dismantle a violent Mexican drug cartel credit a volunteer North Dakota agent for much of their success.

The case known as Operation Speed Racer resulted in more than 70 convictions. The case is mostly closed, except for an alleged hit man whose case was recently unsealed in federal court.

Former West Fargo detective Brad Berg began working on the case in 2005 when he was assigned to a Drug Enforcement Administration task force. He helped investigate a drug killing in the Red River Valley that was connected to the Arelleno Felix cartel in Tijuana, Mexico.

The now-retired Berg got into law enforcement after he gave up his law practice and did almost all of his detective work for free.
