Officials at Theodore Roosevelt National Park in North Dakota are reminding visitors to keep their distance from bison and other large animals.

The National Park Service says a visitor was injured by a bison in the park's North Unit on June 30. The 65-year-old man from Juneau, Alaska, was hiking that night to take pictures of the sunset and stopped to take photos of a bison he encountered while returning to his campground. The bison charged the hiker, causing a large cut on his thigh.

The man climbed a butte and called for help. Several campers arrived and found a bison between them and the hiker. One of the campers fired a handgun into the ground to scare the bison off.

The hiker was treated at a hospital and released.
