District Judge Richard Geiger has announced his retirement effective October 1. He has served as a judge in the Northeast Judicial District since 1995.

Judge Geiger announced his retirement in a letter to Governor Doug Burgum.

"It has been an honor and privilege to serve the citizens of this state . . . and to work with dedicated staff and colleagues," Judge Geiger wrote.

The Supreme Court is required by law to determine if the judgeship should be retained, moved, or eliminated. It would be filled by appointment.

Judge Geiger was initially elected district judge in 1994. He previously served as county judge of Walsh, Pembina, and Cavalier Counties from 1987-1994.

Judge Geiger was in private legal practice in Grafton from 1979-1987. He is a 1979 graduate of the University of North Dakota School of Law.
