Authorities have identified a Grand Forks man and two police officers who fired the shots that killed him early Sunday in Grand Forks.
Police say 41-year-old John Francis Murphy the Third was shot by Corporal Jordan Drees and Officer Michael Ruit.
The incident happened around 3:17 AM Sunday when police received a report of a suicidal subject with a firearm.
Drees and Ruit found Murphy and a female family member – both of whom were armed. Police say the female followed orders and put her firearm on the ground, but Murphy refused to cooperate.
Police say Murphy did not fire his weapon, but his subsequent actions presented a perceived threat, and the officers fired their weapons.
The state Bureau of Criminal Investigation continues to investigate the case, according to Grand Forks P-D policy.
