GF Traffic Speeds To be Reduced

The Grand Forks Council failed to apply the brakes on a plan to lower speed limits on several arterial streets last night. Meeting as a Committee of the Whole members voted six to one in favor staff recommendations for reductions along sections of Columbia Road…Washington…and 32nd Avenue South. In a lengthy debate members talked about everything from conducting a second radar speed survey to why speed limits are raised or lowered in increments of five. Traffic Engineer Jane Williams says the lower limits will have little impact on travel time and reflect current traffic speeds by motorists.
In most cases 40 mile per hour limits would be reduced to 35. Some portions of north Columbia Road would drop to 25 or 30. The council also agreed to tie future speed changes to uniform traffic guidelines that would be reviewed on an annual basis.
