A standoff with police in north Grand Forks ended without incident Friday afternoon. Authorities say a 15-year distressed teen with access to guns threatened suicide. Police evacuated nearby residents of the Valley Ho trailer park. Several streets were also blocked. The crisis negotiation unit was called out. The female emerged several hours later from the home unharmed.
On 9/22/17 at 12:19 am, Grand Forks Police officers were notified of a juvenile that had fled from school. The juvenile was located a little while later at a family member’s home in the Valley Ho Mobile Home Park. The juvenile was mentally distressed, and there was reason to be believe that a firearm was involved. As a precautionary measure, area residents were advised to evacuate from the area until completion of the incident.
Crisis negotiators were able to make contact with the juvenile several times via telephone until eventually they decided to come out and speak in person with the negotiator, and seek further assistance. Although Altru paramedics were on standby, nobody was injured during the incident, and no criminal charges are being pursued in relation to the incident.
Contrary to previous media reports, the Grand Forks Regional SWAT Team was not utilized during this incident.
