A welfare check turned into some tense moments for Grand Forks police last night. Officers were called to an apartment on the 24-hundred block of 36th Avenue South around seven-30 p-m to check on a suicidal male. Initial reports suggested the subject may have a rifle. A perimeter was set up around the apartment and nearby residents were asked to evacuate their units as a precaution.
According to the G-F-P-D initial attempts to contact the individual were unsuccessful. The Grand Forks Regional SWAT Team and Crisis Negotiations Unit responded to the scene. After additional attempts to contact the subject were unsuccessful police used a flashbang device outside the apartment to initiate a response. Swat Team members deployed a robot…entry was made…and the male was found inside deceased.

A large police presence continues in south Grand Forks tonight. Authorities were called to an apartment building on 36th Avenue South on a report of a welfare check. During the course of the investigation dozens of people were evacuated from nearby units. The GFPD has a perimeter set up that extends several blocks in each direction.
