An upcoming Grand Forks sales tax measure received support at a news conference Wednesday.

Representatives of the Chamber and the Grand Forks Region Economic Development Corporation spoke in favor of a half-cent sales tax over the next 20 years.

They say the tax will generate $5 million a year, with 60 percent going to street repairs, and 40 percent to the new water treatment plant.

Keith Lund of the EDC says the tax will solve several problems.

"It's very clear that the city cannot rely on state and federal resources to fund our infrastructure priorities as we have in the past," Lund said. "Those communities that will be the most successful moving forward will be those communities that invest in themselves.":

A special election will be held November 7th, at the Alerus Center.
