GF Sales Tax Increase Supported

The Chamber is on record in support of a one-half percent increase in the Grand Forks sales tax to pay for road repairs and construction of the water treatment plant.Board Chair Matt Walkowiak floated the 20-year tax plan at last night’s council meeting. Walkowiak says he thinks voters would support the hike. The Chamber plan would be cap the tax on purchases of 25-hundred dollars.The council is expected to discuss the idea of a sales tax this summer. Council member Jeannie Mock says she still has some reservations as there are people in the community who are not on board and their perspective is important.Voters rejected a three-quarter cent tax hike in November.
