Despite objections from a handful of residents the Grand Forks council approved the use of a single voting site for the November special election to decide the fate of a half-percent sales tax increase.
Mary Weaver was a vocal critic of the decision to only use the Alerus Center during the June special election on Arbor Park. Weaver says her opinion hasn’t changed.
Council member Danny Weigel says he’s talked to a lot of people and many were unaware of their normal precinct location but knew where to find the Alerus Center. Weigel says using a single site for a special referendum is not voter suppression.
The five million dollars generated by the tax would help fund road repairs and construction of the new water treatment plant. The election is set for November 7th.
