GF Road Funding

Future funding of road repair projects in Grand Forks has generated a lot of discussion at city hall. Much of the talk has centered on a November vote to increase the local sales tax by a-half percent for 20 years. City Council President Dana Sande says he supports the tax hike – reluctantly. Sande says he’s not overly excited about the plan because it does not provide a long term solution for funding roads and streets. Sande has floated the idea of placing a line item on utility bills for future funding.
City attorney Howard Swanson says the city may be able to levy the fee under the city’s Home Rule Charter – but maybe not.
Swanson says the idea needs more research. Grand Forks voters will decide the sales tax question on November 7th.
