A welfare check turned into some tense moments for Grand Forks police last night. Officers were called to an apartment on the 24-hundred block of 36th Avenue South around seven-30 p-m to check on a suicidal male. Initial reports suggested the subject may have a rifle. A perimeter was set up around the apartment and nearby residents were asked to evacuate their units as a precaution.

According to the G-F-P-D initial attempts to contact the individual were unsuccessful. The Grand Forks Regional SWAT Team and Crisis Negotiations Unit responded to the scene. After additional attempts to contact the subject were unsuccessful police used a flashbang device outside the apartment to initiate a response. Swat Team members deployed a robot…entry was made…and the male was found inside deceased.

No officers were injured and no weapons were fired during the incident.



GFPD Statement:

On August 14, 2017 at approximately 7:26pm Officers of the Grand Forks Police Department were dispatched to the 2400 block of 36th Ave. South for a welfare check on a suicidal male subject. Upon arrival officers located a male in his apartment in possession of a rifle. Officers backed out and set up a perimeter on the apartment and attempted to communicate with the male but all initial attempts were unsuccessful. The Grand Forks Regional SWAT Team, the Grand Forks Regional Crisis Negotiations Team and the Grand Forks Regional Bomb Team were activated in respsonse to the situation.

The Crisis Negotiations Team began to attempt to communicate with the male via multiple methods all of which were unscuccessful. During the course of the incident the SWAT Team deployed a flashbang outside of the apartment building in order to initiate a response from the male in order to ascertain whether or not he was still inside but received no response. Members of the SWAT Team and Bomb Team were able to open the door and deploy a robot inside. Upon entry the male was located deceased.

No officers were injured or fired thier service weapons during this incident. The Grand Forks Fire Department and Altru Ambulance Service also assisted during this incident.
