GF - Closing Time Concerns

One of the topics a downtown planner may be tasked with is what to do about increased traffic at bar closing time. Grand Forks police say the use of private vehicles…taxis…Uber…and Lyft have created bottlenecks outside certain drinking establishments. Deputy Chief Jim Remer says officers try to keep the vehicles moving due to increased foot traffic and patron pick-ups. Remer says during peak times traffic can be stacked up preventing emergency vehicles from getting through.
Jeff Holt is one of those drivers who says he understands the public safety concerns - but they can't always control the speed at which their users enter and exit the vehicle.
Solutions could range from one-way streets and designated pick-up/drop-off zones to more signage and education. The council is looking for both short-term and long-term solutions to the problem.
