The June 20th special election in Grand Forks will be run out of the Alerus Center. The Grand Forks council voted five-to-one in favor of the one polling location during last night’s Committee of the Whole meeting. The election will decide the fate of Arbor Park. The city hopes to turn the downtown pocket park into a five story condo complex. Critics circulated petitions to keep the site as is. Park supporter Mary Weaver urged the council to have multiple voting locations. Weaver says even dedicated voters could opt out if it proves to be a hardship waiting in line or getting to the ballot box.
It’s estimated that multiple polling sites would add about five thousand dollars to the cost of the election. Council member Bret Weber cast the lone “No” vote.
