GF Annexation Study

Future annexation of property could allow the footprint of Grand Forks to grow by hundreds of acres – but it could also come at a cost. A recent working council session asked staff to begin looking at the city’s annexation policy. A total of 13 parcels have been identified for further study – ranging in size from eight to over 300 acres. City Planner Brad Gengler says annexation can be a complex issue.
Gengler says both the the Planning and Zoning Commission and council will get a chance to weigh in on the debate in the coming months. He says another thing to consider - whether the city is able to provide services to an area being annexed. He says a new lift station can cost over four-million dollars.
Gengler says there is also the ability of a property owner to protest annexation. The Grand Forks P-and-Z will likely receive an initial briefing on annexation tonight (Wed).
