Fargo fire teams are crediting an alert neighbor for helping to stop the spread of an early morning garage fire. The department was notified of the blaze around 1:45 a-m. When crews arrived on scene the garage was fully engulfed in flames.

There was some fire damage to the home’s attic area and smoke throughout the house. Fire Captain Jason Mehlisch says the sleeping occupants had been alerted by the neighbor and escaped unharmed. Several pets had to be rescued by firefighters.

The neighbor also dug out the buried fire hydrant across the street - which was critical to battling the blaze.

The cause is under investigation. A damage estimate was not available.
