East Grand Forks may start to limit the number of garage sales after receiving complaints that some homeowners are holding them on a weekly basis. The city is looking at beefing up local codes to require residents to obtain a permit before staging such events. Council member Mike Pokzywinski says a few property owners are taking the term rummage sales to a new level. Pokrzywinski says some residential lots are turning into ad hoc thrift stores.
Mayor Steve Gander says a permit system would allow the city to track the number of garage sales per address each year.
There are no state statutes that restrict the number of garage sales - but some Minnesota cities have passed local laws.
