With a higher than average crash ratio the Minnesota Department of Transportation is working with the local M-P-O on improving safety at the Highway 2 / Business 2 intersection in East Grand Forks. The proposed changes would be incorporated into a planned resurfacing project in 2021. MN-Dot’s Darren Laesch says accidents are three times higher than average at that site. The improvements range from lighting and turn lanes to closing the median…acceleration lanes…and a U-turn crossover. Laesch says reducing the speed limit is not an option. The costs of the safety improvements range from 750-thousand to one-point-two million dollars. The East Grand Forks City Council received a status update on the project this week.
