GFPD: Theft from vehicle complaints climb

By Doug Barrett May 6, 2022 | 7:43 AM

Grand Forks police have noticed a recent uptick in calls for theft from motor vehicles. The GFPD has investigated over two-dozen cases in just the past two days.

Lt-Andy Stein says the items stolen vary from vehicle to vehicle.  “It’s been everything fro cash and spare change to portable electronic items and unfortunately firearms that were left in vehicles.”

Stein says the number one thing vehicle owners can do — lock all doors.  “If you have valuables make sure you take them out and secure than in your home and don’t leave them in your vehicle.  Also if you have a place to secure your vehicle in a private garage – or park in a well lit area if possible.”

Stein says some vehicles were damaged to gain entry but the bulk of them were “target of opportunities” or vehicles that were unlocked.
