GF School Safety Plan Discussed

By Doug Barrett Dec 12, 2023 | 8:27 AM

Grand Forks School Board spent part of their Monday night meeting behind closed doors as they discussed plans for implementing security upgrades in buildings across the district. It’s part of the $18 million dollar plan approved by voters back in May.

Sean Sugden of EAPC Architects says designing schools has changed over the years.  “Over my career I have noticed the focus has gone from things like fire and how to avoid a fire and ADA.  We have an issue that has developed over the past few years to safety and security of our students and staff.”

Sugden says they are working with the North Dakota Safety Council on phase one of the plan that includes a full assessment of all schools. He says the goal is to implement a strategy they refer to as Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design.

The next step in readying the Central High School pool will likely come this spring. School officials are looking to fill the shuttered swimming hole with water to test out the mechanical system with the looming closure of the Hyslop Sports Center. If all goes well a liner cover would be purchased to reduce moisture and mitigate damage to the school building. The move would be a cheaper alternative to a 3-5 year fix estimated at upwards of $1 million dollars. The goal is to be able to use the facility until a new indoor aquatics center is completed in 2027. The school board reviewed the plan last night (Monday) – but took no official action.

In other action the board did approved a staff recommendation to hire an Information Technology Manager at a salary range of $81,681 dollars to $101,545.
