The Police Department was contacted today by a rural Grand Forks resident who lives near the southeast portion of the city but outside the city limits.  This resident admitted he was using Tannerite on his property and this is what caused the explosion heard within the city on July 14, 2017 at approximately 9:35 pm.  Tannerite is a type of binary reactive (exploding) rifle target system.  When struck by a high velocity rifle round Tannerite will explode causing the loud detonation heard within the city.  When used for its intended purpose Tannerite is a legal substance.

On July 14, 2017 at approximately 9:35 pm officers of the Grand Forks Police Department responded to the area of the Adams Drive / East Prairiewood Dr neighborhoods in the southeast corner of the city.  Several residents in that area reported hearing a loud explosion.  Officers searched the area by vehicle and on foot but were unable to locate any areas of damage or the possible location of the explosion.

This incident remains under active investigation; the Grand Forks Police Department would ask any residents of that area that may have seen any suspicious persons or vehicles around this time to please contact the Police Department At 787-8000.
