With groundbreaking out of the way, the Fargo-Moorhead Area Diversion can take shape. The multi-billion-dollar flood control project includes a 30-mile diversion channel.
North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum says the diversion will protect more than 235,000 people, more than $25 billion in property value, and nearly 20 percent of the state’s sales tax collections… and save taxpayers hundreds of millions of dollars.
Minnesota U-S Sen. Amy Klobuchar notes that the Red River has exceeded flood stage 55 times since 1902… with seven of the top ten floods occurring in the last three decades.
Substantial completion of the diversion project is expected by 2027.
