EGF school enrollment still slipping

By Doug Barrett Feb 17, 2023 | 8:56 AM

East Grand Forks school officials are working on a revised budget in light of declining enrollment numbers.

Superintendent Mike Kolness told school board members this week that a total of 1,811 students are currently attending classes in District 595. Enrollment has been steadily falling since the beginning of the school year. The numbers are down 57 since back in September and off 112 from the start of the 2021-22 year.  Kolness says the numbers are worth watching and how they impact the budget.

One reason for the decline is a loss of E-L students…or those enrolled in the English Learning program. He says the numbers have been cut in half as many families have moved to the St-Cloud and Twin Cities area.

On a related note Kolness says he’s hopeful of additional state support for special education and in the funding formula with another legislative session underway.
