EGF: Roads…bonds…& pubs

By Doug Barrett Oct 18, 2023 | 8:41 AM

The East Grand Forks council tabled the latest plan last night (Tuesday) to make street improvements along 20th Street NW and 5th Avenue. Residents in the neighborhood have resisted previous attempts to fix the roadway due to the high special assessment costs. Mayor Steve Gander floated the idea of a “partial reconstruction” to address the most immediate needs.
Council member Tim Riopelle says the residents aren’t interested in any reconstruction right now. The council will revisit the road project in the future – but only if residents make the request.

East Grand Forks will ask the state of Minnesota for over $7 million dollars to help fund improvements to the Civic Center and VFW Arena. The funding would be on top of a planned sales tax request of voters to generate a $14.7 million dollars towards the project.
The council approved a resolution of support for use of state bonding money .  The city recently hosted site visits by capital committee members from the House and Senate about inclusion in the state bonding program.

The East Grand Forks council gave final approval to an ordinance that would allow pedal pubs on downtown city streets.
As it stands peddle pubs would be allowed between the hours of 10 a.m. and 10 p.m. The ordinance also covers questions about open container and public consumption.
