The University of North Dakota has fired the director of the school's Energy and Environmental Research Center.
Gerald Groenewold had been placed on paid administrative leave in early May.
The EERC is UND's primary research facility and employs about 300 people.
U-N-D is working on a financial plan to eliminate a growing deficit at the EERC. A report to the NDUS Finance Committee earlier this year projected a deficit of a little over one-million dollars in fiscal 2013.
Thomas Erickson is the center's associate director for business, operations and intellectual property. He is currently overseeing the day-to-day operations of the lab.
