A pro-life supporter is leading the effort to refer three anti-abortion laws in North Dakota. Gary Hangsleben of Grand Forks says the voters of North Dakota deserve a chance to weigh in on legislation designed to make the state’s abortion laws the toughest in the nation. Hangsleben says North Dakota is in a unique position to challenge the U-S Supreme Court’s Roe vs Wade ruling.
One measure would ban abortions as early as six weeks into a pregnancy, when a fetal heartbeat can first be detected. Another would prohibit women from having an abortion because a fetus has a genetic defect, such as Down syndrome.
Supporters of the referral need to collect 13-thousand-452 signatures to place the issue on the ballot.
